GOP math

On Tuesday Republican voters in Mississippi and Alabama went to the polls for their respective state primaries and dealt another blow to presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney's run for the White House.

To date Mr. Romney has a comfortable lead in the delegate count - which is the only count that matters. However, voters in the Deep South rejected Mr. Romney's candidacy by a better than two-to-one margin. Mr. Romney only captured 29% of the vote in Alabama and just over 30% in Mississippi. Hence, some 70% of the voters didn't want Mr. Romney to win the nomination.

As he limps toward the convention, Mr. Romney ought to send a thank-you card to Newt Gingrich for staying in the race and taking votes and delegates away from Rick Santorum.
